What’s In a Name?

PWRDF changes name to Alongside Hope

The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) was created in response to the 1958 Springhill Mine Disaster in Nova Scotia. The disaster trapped 174 miners underground, killing 75 of them. Since that time, PWRDF has grown and evolved. The work of this organization supports relief and development around the world. This past year, PWRDF worked with 32 partners in 70 countries. There were 303,864 direct participants, and $5.2 million was allocated to communities in need. These communities are all over the world, including at home here in Canada.

Charity Intelligence places PWRDF in the top 100 ranking with a 5STAR rating. So why change the name?

A new name was needed that better reflects the work, and which would sustain the work into the future. In discussions with stakeholders and staff, one dominant theme emerged: partnership. Most of the work supported with “PWRDF” funds arises from grass-roots ideas and is carried out in collaboration with people on the ground –in partnership, alongside.

The new name will take some time to roll off our tongues as “PWRDF” currently does. Or maybe not. But more importantly, the work supported by this Anglican relief agency is needed now more than ever. With significant 'Aid' funding cuts elsewhere in the world, we have an opportunity step up. In the words of Christ, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

During Lent, take the time to learn more about this wonderful Anglican charity. You can learn a little more during a fun 'games' evening by signing up below.
