Compline Guest Preachers
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week, throughout the three sung Compline services, we will be graced with three guest preachers from Salal & Cedar: Caitlin Reilley Beck, Sandy Hwang, and The Rev'd Laurel Dykstra (see bios below). The traditional sung Compline service is a great way to close out the day, to stay vigilant and reflective during Holy Week.
Caitlin Reilley Beck
I am a fat, queer, neurodivergent, polyamorous, genderqueer, white settler who lives on stolen Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-waututh land. I am currently one of the co-pastors of Open Way Community Church and a board member and song leader for Music that Makes Community. I cannot be stopped from acquiring an ever-increasing list of special interests and hobbies including drumming, grassroots ecumenism, photography, intersectionality, liturgical geekery, values-based administration, singing in harmony, empowering young people, godparenting, eating french fries, jigsaw puzzling, making art, and being a feminist killjoy. I believe that every voice is important in the song of God’s creation and I aim to empower people of all ages to use their voices as leaders in their churches and communities by first of all learning how to listen.
Sandy Hwang
As a candidate for ordination in the United Church of Canada, Sandy Hwang (she/her) is currently working toward an MDiv at the Vancouver School of Theology. Sandy was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Canada 28 years ago and have resided on the unceded and ancestral territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations ever since.
Sandy believes that climate justice is intricately connected to racial justice and feels very much called to equity work. Sandy spent the 2022-2023 school year doing theological field education with Salal & Cedar and has developed a racial justice workshop as a result of her time there.
Sandy is also a current participant in the Pacific Jubilee Soulguiding Program, learning to attend deeply to her own soul work as well as to listen faithfully to the soul work of others.
The Rev'd Laurel Dykstra
Laurel Dykstra (they/them) is the founding priest of Salal + Cedar Watershed Discipleship Community, a little church in our diocese that worships outdoors and has a vocation for ecological justice. Laurel is an enthusiastic amateur naturalist who loves photographing birds and is the author of a book on interspecies loneliness, Wildlife Congregations out soon from Hancock House.
